3 From Kairo - I'm Gonna To Find Her
1987

I know very little about this release. In Discogs they are listed as 3 From Kairo. Yet the label has Days inserted in pen on it. They also released an 12" on Jayrem Records in 1984 under the Kairo. I'm Gonna To Find Her and the B Side were produced by New Zealand musical legend Billy Kristian.

This was the only release by Auckland Band Russia. Unfortunately another band I know very little about. Boucha the B-Side is another great lost New Zealand Power Pop gem.

Grey Parade - Call To The Trees
1985

Not to be confused with the British band Grey Parade from around the same time. This is the Auckland Pop band of the same name. They featured two members of The Exponents. The A-side is produced by Exponents bassist Dave Gent who also plays the guitar in the group along with drummer 'Harry' Harralambi. This was their only release.

Wayne Mason - Rain From A Blue Sky

Wayne Mason's story is well known. Former member of legendary New Zealand bands The Fourmyula, Rockinghorse and The Warratahs. Writer of the song Nature voted the best New Zealand song by APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) in 2001. This single is not so well known. It is his only solo release. It has never been reissued on CD. Rain From A Blue Sky was a Silver Scroll finalist.

Noel McKay - Party Songs For Adults Only Vol.3
1960

Noel McKay was one New Zealand's first Drag Queens. He made a career singing "blue songs" (songs with adult lyrics). Originally from Oamaru he became a female impersonator in the early 1950's. By the 1960's he was a fixture in Auckland's cabaret scene as well as Sydney's King's Cross.

Drone - The Land Of The Free
1986

The back cover has nothing printed on it. It is just  black.

This is Art band Drone's first single. They were formed from the ashes of Tauranga band Rome. Darryl Hocking and Daniel Newnham had both played in Rome and where attending Elam Art School at University of Auckland. Rosemary Whitehead also hailed from Tauranga. They released two singles and an album in New Zealand as well as an E.P. in the UK. Here's an excellent telling of the history of Drone.

Ragnarok - Fenris
1975

This is Progressive Rock band Ragnarok's first single. Although they were formed in Auckland in 1974 three of their members, Mark and Andre Jayet and Ramon York originally came from Christchurch. Ragnarok built up at following playing Radio Hauraki's Buck A Head concerts and with a residency at Granny's. They also toured New Zealand extensively. All the members of the band sang. Lead Vocalist Lea Maalfrid was also a very talented songwriter. She wrote both sides of this single. Lea Maalfrid left the band at the end of 1975 after the release of their first album. The rest of the band released a second album and carried on gigging until 1977.

Tigers - Red Dress
1980

This is Wellington Power Pop band Tigers' first single. They contain three future members of Country band The Warratahs, bassist Nick Theobald, guitarist Barry Saunders, and drummer Mike Knapp. After this single was released another future Warratah and ex-Fourmula member Wayne Mason joined them on keyboards.  But the Tigers sounded nothing like The Warratahs they were a Pop band. After touring extensively around New Zealand and releasing three singles the band moved to Australia.  They released a further two singles and an album in Australia before breaking up.

Dave Miller Set - Mr. Guy Fawkes
1969

This is the fourth single by the Dave Miller Set. The Set had grown out of Christchurch band Dave Miller And The Byrds. The band divided its time between New Zealand and Australia. With a large following in both countries. They released a total of six singles all on the Australian label Spin Records. When the managing director of Spin heard this single he labeled it "the worst load of rubbish the company had been involved in". It was only released because it had already been pressed. It was a hit, peaking at number two in the Australia charts.

Hayden Wood - It's Alright
1970

This is Hayden Wood's third New Zealand released single. He was born Anthony Jones, but after moving to Sydney Australia in the mid 1960's he used the stage name Tony Summers. His band Tony Summers & The Echoes recorded for Spin Records and supported The Rolling Stones on their Australian tour in early 1966. By 1968 he was in Britain, signed to Nems Records and known as Hayden Wood. He was the first person to cover an Elton John / Bernie Taupin song (his first single Sixty Years On). Greatest Discovery the B-Side of  It's Alright is also an Elton John/Bernie Taupin song. This single was recorded on a trip back to New Zealand in 1970.
