Dave Miller Set - Mr. Guy Fawkes
1969

This is the fourth single by the Dave Miller Set. The Set had grown out of Christchurch band Dave Miller And The Byrds. The band divided its time between New Zealand and Australia. With a large following in both countries. They released a total of six singles all on the Australian label Spin Records. When the managing director of Spin heard this single he labeled it "the worst load of rubbish the company had been involved in". It was only released because it had already been pressed. It was a hit, peaking at number two in the Australia charts.

  1. This single is very highly regarded by a number of people in the UK. It popped up quite a lot in the psychedelic forum discussion rooms. Many of them were familiar with the original version by Eire Apparent and were impressed with the energy of this version. His version of Why Why Why is also singled out a lot for praise. So maybe its more obscure here in NZ than overseas.

  2. Easily eclipses the original, this is simply astonishing. A breathtakingly beautiful arrangement and massive kudos to the Australian studio when you consider this was done on a 4-track machine. One of the finest moments in NZ musical history.
